PRESS RELEASE:

MM Fine Art is thrilled to present RENATE ALLER: Shared History, on view June 29 – July 14, 2019, with an opening reception June 29, 6 to 8 PM. German born, and New York based photographer Renate Aller is known for her exploration of our relationship to the natural world. The exhibition will be comprised of 10 stunning large-scale works, featuring sand, mountain, and oceanscapes. Often blurring the line between abstraction and representation, Aller unveils relationships between profoundly different landscapes.

Aller first began her initial oceanscape series as a daily meditation, photographing the ocean from her Long Island home almost two decades ago. Documenting the subtle variations and moods of the Atlantic, she later shifted her lens to the sand dunes of New Mexico and Colorado, reflecting on how land and sea are intimately linked. Both are in constant motion and the photographer notes that “dunes carry oceans’ memories”. Aller has long “been fascinated by the phenomenon of the oceans and deserts/sand dunes, an intimate relationship that is based not on proximity but on shared history.” Her more recent mountain picture series continues the conversation. Aller establishes connections through composition, often creating the illusion of one continuous space.

In addition to Shared History at MM Fine Art, Aller currently has a solo exhibition The Space Between Memory and Expectation, at The Parrish Art Museum on view through July 28th. Aller has just published her fourth monograph Mountain Interval, with an essay by Terrie Sultan. Mountain Interval follows previous projects Ocean|Desert, dicotyledon, and the long-term project Oceanscapes. Her artworks are in the collections of corporate institutions, private collectors, and museums, including Lannan Foundation, Santa Fe; National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT; George Eastman House, Rochester, NY; New Britain Museum of American Art, CT; Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany; Chazen Museum of Art, Madison, WI; and Parrish Art Museum, Water Mill, NY.
